As promised, I will start with a couple stats about the program:
-343 student participants, mostly undergrad juniors and seniors
-Average GPA: 3.48
-53% political science majors
-represent 105 colleges in the US with several students from the UK (met one-REALLY great kid in my small groups who is only 18 and been a member of Youth Parliment for 2 years, after the convention is going to New Yourk to meet mayor Bloomberg and then to D.C...Taking a year off to travel and might run for City Council in London)
Today we had breakfast on campus and I sat with the three guys from Iowa and our professor here came and ate with us. We are split into 20(ish) groups, so our small group has 12 students (6 from my school, all boys who I didn't know prior to denver) led by Professor Covington from Iowa too. The other students include my roommate from Kansas City, the guy I mentioned above from London, a girl from New Orleans, one from texas, and two from Florida. We went to the Ranger Dome and listened to the President of Regis talk, and then had lectured from Dr. Thomas Cronin who used to be a professor at Princeton and was the President at Colorado College and has written 10 books and textbooks about Colorado government and the Presidency.
Next Michael Genovese talked to us about the differences between Obama and McCain and who Obama may choose as his VP (I'm excited that he will announce it probably here at the convention!)
Lunch at Pizza Hut (not too many food choices around here :)), met in small groups, and then had the afternoon and evening off to explore downtown. Went with 4 others to walk around more, got burgers at a local place, and took pictures of the state capital building and courthouse at sunset. LOVE this place.
Tomorrow the speaker I'm most anticipating is Ricky Kirshner. He is the Producer of this year's DNC and has worked in tv for over 20 years, winning and Emmy Award, a Peabody, and an Edwin R> Murrow Award. He produced the series of post 9/11 "I Love NY" commercials and has produced SuperBowl Pregame and Halftime Shows 2007-2009, the Daytime Emmy Awards, and the CBS Thanksgiving Day Parade.
Tomorrow we get to hear from Reverend Leah D. Daughtry, and eventually also from Travis Dredd, and Cameron Moody (http://www.demconvention.com/senior-leadership-team-for-the-denver-2008-convention/)
My professor said today that there are two students from U of Iowa here with the ABC news team and although they are in a different program, he would try to connect us with them to see if we could work together on anything and get more access into the Convention next week. There are also breakfasts next week for each state and its delegates, and he is going to help us try and work our way into one to talk to elected officials...I don't know if I count as an Illinois or Iowa resident though! :)
Midnight, time for SLEEP. I've got to apologize again for all the typos I probably have, and if this is all still a bit dry. I'm having a great time, but I don't know how exciting it is to read. Anyways, next week is when the real "organized chaos" will begin :)
